Good food can still sell badly in a weak pack. In a shop, a customer decides within seconds, so your packaging has to do the selling. Here are seven mistakes we often see with small and growing food brands, and how to fix them.
1. Too much text on the front
The front of the pack should carry the brand name, the product name and one hero image or line. Move the long text to the back.
2. Weak colour contrast
If your pack fades next to competitors, nobody picks it up. Use a strong main colour and make sure the product name is easy to read from a distance.
3. No clear visual hierarchy
Customers should read the brand first, then the product, then the flavour or benefit. When everything is the same size, nothing stands out.
4. Ignoring the print finish
A small touch such as foil on the logo or spot UV on the product name makes a pack feel premium. Plan the finish at the design stage, not after printing.
5. No system across flavours
Each variant should look related to the others but still be easy to tell apart. Use a fixed layout with one changing colour or illustration per flavour.
6. Skipping mockups and dieline checks
A flat design can look perfect on screen and fail on the real pack. Always check the design on the actual pack shape and keep important text away from folds and seals.
7. Copying competitors
If your pack looks like everyone else’s, price becomes the only reason to buy. Study the category, then choose a clear point of difference.
Frequently asked questions
How many colours should a food pack use?
There is no fixed number. Two or three main colours with strong contrast usually work best, with one accent colour to separate flavours.
Should I show a photo of the food on the pack?
A real, appetising photo or a clear window builds trust. Avoid low-quality stock photos because customers notice them.
What information must be on Indian food packs?
Common details include weight, ingredients, veg or non-veg mark, MRP, dates and FSSAI licence number. Always confirm the current labelling rules with your compliance advisor.
