FMCG and Food Packaging Design: A Practical Guide for Indian Brands

Quick answer: good FMCG and food packaging design does three jobs at once: it gets noticed on a crowded shelf, it tells the customer what is inside in two seconds, and it carries all the legally required information clearly. Digital Saudagar is a packaging design agency in Jaipur that designs labels, pouches, boxes and full packaging ranges for food, sweets, snacks and FMCG products.

Why food packaging is different

Food is an impulse and trust purchase. Customers judge freshness, taste and quality from the pack before they ever taste the product. Food packaging also has strict mandatory information, and it has to look good in many sizes, from a ₹10 sachet to a 1 kg gift box.

What must be on a food label in India

Packaged food sold in India needs specific details as per FSSAI labelling rules. Typical items include:

  • Product name and brand name
  • List of ingredients in descending order
  • Nutritional information
  • Veg or non-veg symbol
  • FSSAI logo and licence number
  • Net quantity, MRP, batch number, date of manufacture and best before
  • Manufacturer or marketer name and address, and customer care details
  • Allergen declaration where applicable

Rules change from time to time, so always confirm the final text with your food safety consultant. Our job is to design all of this so it is readable and still looks beautiful.

The front of pack: the 3-second test

  • Brand: recognisable from two metres away.
  • Product: what it is, in big clear words.
  • Variant: flavour or type, colour-coded across the range.
  • One reason to buy: for example “No palm oil” or “Made with jaggery”.

Everything else can go on the back. We cover common errors in 7 packaging design mistakes food brands make.

Designing a range, not a single pack

FMCG brands rarely sell one product. Design a system: same layout, logo position and typography, with colour or illustration changing per variant. It looks strong on the shelf, it is cheaper per SKU and new products launch faster.
